Our project was inspired by the stories of three people.

Our aim was to create an interactive experience that communicated the invisibility of the menopause. Inspired by the stories of Dr Bennett, Dan and Sarah, we created three ‘invisible’ boxes that encapsulated their experience and attitude towards the menopause.

A bit about each participant

Dr Bennett is a Jewish woman who has felt the struggle of choosing between HRT and more natural remedies.

Dan is a trans man, who may or may not experience a menopause.

Sarah is a woman who may experience the menopause twice due to cancer treatment.

How does it work?

The box contains a section of a person’s story and is presented across three clear panels, however, pieces of information from the story are missing.

In this way the panels work like a puzzle, the person interacting with the box must find the right answers to complete the story.

The answers can be found in information packs. These take the form of letters, booklets, prescription packs, posters and flashcards.

Then what happened?

We sent the boxes to the participants. Dan received Sarah's story, Dr Bennett received Dan's story and Sarah received Dr Bennett's story.

On Monday 15th March we hosted an event with the three individuals, giving them the opportunity to meet each other and share what they had learnt. Additionally, in their boxes we included an element of someone else’s story, we swapped an information pack! At the event they had to work together to complete their stories.

What about the future?

In the future we hope to create more ‘invisible’ boxes, share more stories and help educate people, to tackle the lack of awareness, knowledge, and social stigmas surrounding the menopause.
