You may notice when reading the stories on this website that some contain metaphors to describe complicated feelings towards menstruation and the menopause.

Pernille Bogø Jørgensen is a PhD student studying linguistics at Lancaster University. Her research focuses on metaphor in discourse surrounding menopause, highlighting the power of the written word to communicate a person’s experience. She peels away at the many layers of meaning to reveal the hidden messages beneath.

Pernille has analysed the writing of Sarah, Dan’s and Dr Bennett’s. Click here to read it.

Our growing collection of stories focus on capturing the diversity of experiences and avoids reducing the menopause to a series of stereotypes.

Stories have been volunteered by people who have a personal relationship with the menopause.

They might be experiencing the menopause themselves,

The menopause affects everyone regardless of age or gender.

or they know someone who is

everyone has a story to tell.

We hope you learn something new, or perhaps feel less alone because someone else has had a similar experience to you.
